Our ELL program (English Language Learners) is designed to support English learners and those who have other languages spoken in the home. We believe that a strong foundation in English literacy is critical to a student's success in school and beyond. We also believe that it is a wonderful thing to be bilingual, and that being bilingual will give children more opportunities later in life. We enjoy giving the children time to share things about their family's heritage and home language.
We provide small group literacy instruction where we focus on the four domains of English Language Arts: Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening. We try to increase our students' vocabulary and comprehension through the use of interesting fiction and non-fiction literature, games, conversations, writing projects, and other activities. The students meet with us during a time when their class is working on independent activities. That way, students are not taken out of the class during their teacher's instructional time.
In addition to on-going assessment ELL students' English proficiency is measured by a test called the ACCESS for ELLs 2.0. ACCESS is taken every January by all students who have qualified for the program. Through the ACCESS score reports, parents are able to see how their child is progressing in the different language domains. Students are eligible to remain in the program until they have achieved a level of English proficiency equal to their peers in each of the four areas of Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking.
We are happy to speak with you if you have questions about our program. Please feel free to call or e-mail!
